Week 9: 5th November 2018

This week we returned to school, with the children eager to catch up with their friends and talk about what they had been up to during their week off. Many children drew pictures of what they had done and were supported to label the pictures.

Many of the children had been to see fireworks over the weekend, so we decided to make our own firework pictures on Monday using paint.

We learned that some children in our class celebrated Diwali this week. We learned why they celebrate Diwali and what they do at home to celebrate. We made rangoli patterns using coloured rice, and diva pots using clay.

We also learned about Armistice Day and the 100th anniversary of the end of the war. We talked about why we wear poppies and many children chose to buy their own. Oliver’s dad kindly came in to give an assembly to the whole school about the service he had given. The children were really interested to hear about this.

In maths we have introduced addition this half term. We are learning to add together two groups of objects and finding a total. We added Numicon pieces together and found the total. We are also beginning to record these calculations.

In phonics this week we have recapped the sounds we have learned so far. We also introduced ‘c’ and ‘k’ and learned how to write them. Next week we will be holding an ‘At Home’ session based on phonics. We will be teaching the children a new sound so that parents can see how phonics is taught in our school. The 'At Home' session will last about 20/30 minutes.

The children visited our school library on Thursday and chose a book to take home with them. They can keep this book at home for a week. Then next Thursday they will go to the library again, where they can return that book and choose a new one. Please ensure your child’s library book is in their book bag every Thursday.

Next week we will be looking at the story of Stick Man. We will be using sticks for various activities throughout the week, so we would be grateful if children could collect some sticks over the weekend and then bring them in on Monday morning.

Well done on a great week of learning Toucan Class!
