This week in Hedgehog Class, we learned about Chinese New Year. We learned how Chinese New Year is celebrated, and the traditions associated with this celebration. We made Chinese lanterns, Chinese dragons and Chinese drums. Some children had their own lanterns and drums at home, so they brought them in to share them with us. We learned how to use chopsticks this week. We had to pick up noodles and put them into a bowl. Luckily we had two “chopstick experts” in our class, who were able to teach us how to hold them correctly.
The children were quite interested in dragons after learning about Chinese New Year, so we decided to read a story containing a dragon. We read Room on a Broom by Julia Donaldson. We thought about ways to scare the dragon, and wrote down our ideas. We came up with our own potions, and wrote the ingredients for them. After writing our own potions, we decided to make them in the mud kitchen.
In maths this week we worked on number recognition and made our own number lines. We really focused on numbers from 10-20 this week. We learned how to form these numbers, and that the ‘1’ must always come first.
We learned 2 new sounds in phonics this week. We learned ow (blow the snow) and oo (poo at the zoo). We practised reading these new sounds, and finding them within words. We also practised writing some of these words.
Next week we will be celebrating Book Week. On Thursday we will all be dressing up as our favourite book character. In Reception we will be looking at books written by Julia Donaldson. If the children have any Julia Donaldson books at home, they can bring them in during the week so that we can share them.
