This week we continued to learn about space. We read the story ‘The way back home’ written by Oliver Jeffers. In this story a boy meets an alien. We also read a poem called ‘I’d like to meet an alien’ by Ken Nesbitt. We thought about what we would do if we ever met an alien. We drew pictures and wrote a sentence about what we would do. We drew our own aliens, and then made aliens using various materials.
We read another story by Oliver Jeffers called ‘How to catch a star’. We learned about constellations. We looked at examples of famous constellations and then drew our own using chalk and black paper.
We learned the names of the planets in our solar system and learned facts about them. We listened to a song about the planets on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQrlgH97v94 .
In maths this week we have been learning numerals to 20. We have been identifying them out of order and then ordering them from 1 to 20. We then played a game where one number is taken away and we have to work out which one is missing. This is something that parents could do at home over half term to support with number recognition.
In phonics this week we learned two more sounds; ‘igh’(fly high) and ‘ow’(blow the snow). We have been working on reading and writing words containing these sounds.
We will be having our Science Week on the first week back after half term. We have lots of interesting investigations planned for that week. Our theme for the week is 'things that can fly'.
We love to hear about what the children get up to when they’re outside of school. If you would like to send in pictures of something your child does over half term, we would be happy to share it with the class when we get back. We hope you all have a lovely half term and look forward to seeing you all on Monday 25th February.
