Week 5: 1st October 2018

This week in Reception we have been looking at ‘You Choose’ books. On each page the children had to choose their favourite character, animal, activity etc. We have enjoyed choosing our favourites and explaining why. We have focused on using full sentences to explain our choices. Some children also chose to draw pictures of their favourite aliens and animals, with adults supporting them to label their pictures.

In phonics this week we have introduced two sounds, ‘m’ and ‘a’. We have learned a jolly phonics song to accompany both of the sounds, and learned how to write the letters. To help us form these letters correctly, we have learned some rhymes. When we write ‘m’ we say ‘Maisy mountain mountain’, and for ‘a’ we remember that it is ‘round the apple, down the leaf’.  Please encourage your child to use the correct letter formation when writing these or any letters.

In maths we have been exploring balancing scales and talking about weight. We have also looked at ordering objects by height, and using the correct vocabulary to describe the objects eg taller than, shorter than, heavier, lighter.

We have now introduced ‘rolling snack’ in Reception.  This means that the children choose the time of the morning they would like to have their milk and snack. They have done really well this week to remember to wash their hands first and tidy up afterwards.

The children also received their first Reception reading books today! There is a letter in your child’s bookbag giving you more information about this. Please ensure your child’s reading book and reading record are in your child’s bookbag every day. We read with all of the children during the week and we make a record of this in their reading records.

The reading book box will be placed near the door on Tuesday morning, if your child is ready to change their book. Again, please encourage your child to place their book in the box themselves.  If you wish to keep that book for longer, just leave it in your child’s bookbag until Friday, when we will change them again.

Thank you for bringing in the environmental signs, objects for our Autumn display and the children’s favourite books! We have enjoyed sharing all of these during the week.

Next week we will be reading the story ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ and beginning to talk about Harvest.

How to say the sounds

This video demonstrates how to say the sounds in their pure form. Please use this video to ensure that you and your child are saying the 'pure' sound when practising their Phonics and reading. Thank you
