We began our first week back to school by talking about the things we had done over our Christmas holidays. All of the children had the opportunity to talk in front of the class about the photos that had been sent in for them. They then wrote a sentence about their photo. Thank you all for sending in those photographs for us to use.
As the week went on we began to talk about castles. Some children brought in books about castles from home, and we learned about the different features of castles. We drew pictures of castles and also made our own castles using junk modelling materials. We built one castle to use for our small world play. The children then made their own characters and flags to add to the castle. They then role played with the characters they had made.
We talked about shields and talked about how each shields would have a coat of arms on them. We made our own shields and decorated them by drawing pictures of our favourite things on them.
In maths we introduced 10 frames this week. We are beginning to find different ways to make 10, by filling the frames with red and yellow circles. We are also continuing to look at subitising, encouraging the children to count in groups rather than counting the circles individually.
We will spend some time in January revising the phonics sounds that we learned last term. We will practise writing simple CVC words, and some short phrases. We will also practise reading and writing words containing the ‘special friends’ we have learned. Please continue to practise tricky words at home. When they have learned all of the words on their tag we will be able to add new words to it.
Next week we will continue to learn about castles. If your child has any books about castles, knights, dragons, princes, princesses etc, please could you bring them in for us to read.
