We have had a fantastic first few weeks together as Penguins. We have been getting to know each other well and exploring our new classroom, learning what life in Year One is all about.
We have been revisiting some sounds in Phonics - ay, ee, igh, ow, oo and oo - practising sounding out and spelling words, applying these sounds. We have also done lots of handwriting practise each day to make sure we are using the correct formations.
Sentence writing has been a big focus for us (and will continue to be this year!) so we have been thinking about what makes a good piece of writing. We have been checking our work to make sure we are using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops as well as using the correct sounds, spelling tricky words correctly and writing neatly on the line. What a lot to remember!! That's why we say our sentence out loud before we write it so that it sticks in our head! (We call this 'hold a sentence.)
Maths has been lots of practical activities learning about and practising subitising, number patterns and representing numbers as well as looking at different resources such as Numicon, tens frames and dice to help us in this. Don't forget to look at the subitising videos on YouTube if you want too practise this at home!
And as well as all the wonderful English and Maths learning we have also done paintings of ourselves, planted some daffodils ready for Spring with Mrs Oliver, had two fantastic RE lessons with Mrs Bastaple about the Creation Story and Harvest, PE sessions with Game On and Mrs Charles and Music with Mrs Caperon. What a busy few weeks we've had. And the year has only just begun....
Happy weekend everyone!
