What a first week back! The children have been busy straight away with a brilliant week focusing on Science learning. Although Science is not a discrete subject which we teach Science skills run through our curriculum with our Characteristics of Effective Learning and our strand Understanding the World.
The whole school focus was on Flying with each year group focusing on something different. Receptions focus was on bubbles. The children explored pre-made bubble mixture making observations about the shape, size and way they moved. We then got a message from a friend of mine Melody who is a bubble show performer in America. We watched some of her videos and she asked if the children could help her make a new bubble wand to add into her show. She wanted to know whether the children could make her a heart shaped bubble. Together we discussed this and talked about whether it was possible with the children making predictions. They then had the opportunity to make their wands and test it for themselves. They discovered that we couldn't make bubbles any other shape than spherical. They then began to make their own investigations as many children noticed that the paper plate wands didn't last long in the mixture. We then explored materials further (What fantastic young scientists we have in Parrots).
A whole school task was to explore paper planes. The children explored which material was best to make the planes and practised throwing them in the hall. They had great fun and showed real engagement in the science skills. They started tweaking their planes changing the wings and nose of their planes to explore whether they were able to fly further.
On Thursday we were lucky to have a gymnastics session led by Mrs Charles. The children showed fantastic listening skills and were able to complete a gymnastic sequence. They had lots of fun seeing if they could remember it in small groups. Mrs Charles will be continuing to work with us this half term.
The week was a busy one especially for the first week back and the children have come back in great form. I am super proud of them and can't wait to see them develop as scientists over the next two and a half years. I am very excited for this half term and all the learning that will happen.
Next week is book week. We have a special event called Book at Bedtime where you are invited back to hear stories read by the staff. This will be hosted at Bushey Manor and is a must see event! Also on Thursday the children can come to school dressed as a book character. The book fair will also be in school every day so come and choose a new story while raising money for the school library.
