This week we have had Science Week at school. Our whole school theme was things that can fly, and our focus in Reception was on bubbles.
On Monday we used a mind map to think of all of the things that can fly. We came up with lots of ideas for this. In the afternoon we explored bubbles outside. We had some bubble mixture and bubble wands and spent time playing with them.
On Tuesday we still had bubble mixture but no bubble wands, so we decided to make our own. We thought about the materials we could use to make them and the shapes they could be. We looked at lots of examples and then used available resources to make our own. We were encouraged to plan our bubble wands, thinking about the best materials.
We predicted what would happen when we put the bubble wands in the mixture. Later in the morning we had the opportunity to test out our wands and our predictions. Many of the wands successfully blew bubbles! However, some of the wands made using paper plates quickly broke. We learned that paper gets wet and soggy when dipped in the bubble mixture. Luckily we still had more resources available, so some of the children decided to make new wands, using the information they had gathered to choose the best resources this time. We also recorded what we had done.
On Thursday we made lots of planes. We were given the choice of paper, newspaper or card to make our own paper planes. We investigated the materials available, and thought carefully about which type of paper we should use. We then tested our planes outside to see which ones could travel furthest.
This half term we will be having PE sessions every Wednesday and Thursday. During our Thursday sessions we will be doing gymnastics. We were introduced to it this week by learning a simple routine. We learned some gymnastics positions including a straddle, tuck and a pike.
Thank you to all of the parents that sent in photos of what their children did over half term. We shared all of them during the week. We always like to receive photographs showing us what children like to do outside of school. Please feel free to email us any time your child has something they would like to share, and we will make sure to share it with the class.
As we are now learning Set 2 sounds in phonics, we have sent home a copy of all of these sounds for children to practise at home. If you have any questions about these sounds please ask myself or Mrs. Dunne and we will be happy to help.
Next week we will be celebrating Book Week at school. We have many lovely activities planned throughout the week. Our learning will be based around the book ‘Peace at last’ by Jill Murphy. Our Book at Bedtime evening will take place on Wednesday, and everybody will be dressing up as their favourite character on Thursday for World Book Day.
