Bushey and Oxhey Infant School

Educating Today's Child for Tomorrow!

Proud to be part of Bushey Primary Education Federation Headteacher: Mrs M Cooper

Week 4: 22nd January 2018

This week in Hedgehog Class, we looked at the story ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’. We decided to make our own bear cave using junk modelling materials. The children worked really well together, sharing their ideas on how to make the bear cave even better. We then built up a small world tray based on the story. We found resources around the classroom to make the long wavy grass, the thick oozy mud, the deep river, the dark forest and the snowstorm. We wrote labels for tray, and then made our own puppets to retell the story.

We decided to make our own class book based on the story, changing where the family walked on each page. In our story, the family walked through a hairdresser’s, a restaurant, a zoo and Bushey and Oxhey Infants. Just like in ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’, we thought about the sounds we would hear as we walked through each place. We thought the family would hear a lot of ‘chat chat’ as they walked through Bushey and Oxhey Infants!

In our outdoor area we decided to build a bear cave using the wooden blocks and crates. We worked together to build a large cave, making sure it was safe for the bear to live in. The children suggested we make bear masks too. We really enjoyed acting out the story using the props we had made.

We decided to have a teddy bears picnic on Friday. We wrote invitations to our teddies, asking if they would like to come. We wrote a list of what we would need to take to the picnic. We made our own sandwiches and decorated biscuits to bring to the picnic. On Friday afternoon we had a lovely picnic with our teddies, and a little dance afterwards.

In maths we have continued to look at subtraction. We are learning that there are many resources we can use to help us work out a calculation. We can use our fingers, objects to count or number lines. We will continue to work on subtraction again next week.

On Thursday afternoon we had Competition Afternoon, where we wore our house t-shirts and competed in house teams. We had to work together to bring all of the cones onto our pirate ships. We played various games where we had to work as a team. The children really got into the spirit of it, cheering on their team mates during each competition.

We will be having our first class assembly next Wednesday, 31st January. This is a chance for us to show you what we have been learning at school. The assembly will begin at about 9.15am and will last for 10-15minutes. During the week the children were given words to learn, which they will be saying during the assembly. Please practise these with your child, so they are confident with them.

*Please ensure your child has their reading book and reading record at school every day. The children share their reading books with us every day, not just on Tuesday and Friday. It is difficult for us to read with your child if he/she does not have their reading book and reading record at school on the day we would like to read with them.

Well done on your great learning this week Hedgehog Class!
