In Hedgehog Class this week we looked at the story of The Gingerbread Man. We read the book and then made our own puppets for each of the characters in the story. We built up a small world tray to retell the story, adding a house and a stream.
In literacy this week, some children made their own zig zag books based on the story. They used speech bubbles to write down what the gingerbread man said as he ran away. We also used pictures to make up our own simple stories.
In maths we continued to look at addition, and continued to focus on counting on. We had two groups of objects that we needed to add together. We covered the larger group, and so had to remember the number of objects in there without being able to count them. We then had to add the second group to it, by counting on one object at a time. The children are beginning to pick up that skill, but it could be something that parents work on at home too.
In phonics we learned the sounds ‘air’ (that’s not fair) and ‘ir’ (whirl and twirl). We practised reading words containing those sounds, and writing words and captions with those sounds in them.
As Easter is fast approaching, we took the opportunity to visit St James’ Church on Thursday afternoon. While we were there, we learned about the story of Jesus’ life. We also learned why Christians celebrate Easter and how they celebrate it.
This week we have been busy practising for our whole school Spring Assembly. This will be taking place next Tuesday, both in the morning and in the afternoon. We are looking forward to performing for many of our parents on that day.
