We have been learning about police officers this week. In literacy we read a non-fiction book about police, then the children helped to write a list of all of the things a police officer needs, and a list of all the things a police officer does. In maths we have also been working on number recognition, focusing on numbers up to 20. In phonics we learned three new sounds; sh, r and j. We also learned the tricky words ‘is’ and ‘be’.
The children have been quite creative this week. We made police cars using junk modelling boxes, and painted them blue. We then learned how to use split pins to make moving wheels for our vehicles. The children also painted their own police officers, using a three step process. Outside the children helped to build a police station role play. We used large boxes to make our own police car. The children came up with lots of different scenarios to act out.
On Friday the children extended this by adding a petrol station for the police to refuel their vehicles. However the petrol we were using was not travelling all the way along the pipe. We spent some time figuring out why this was so, and working out how to solve the problem.
