This week we read the story of Stickman. We drew a Story S to remember the order of the story. Some children drew and labelled their own Story S. We made our own small world tray for the story. We used junk modelling materials to make props from the story. The props we made included a bridge, sandcastle and a fireplace.
We also made our own stick men characters using sticks children had brought in to school. We thought about how best to attach the sticks, and chose to use elastic bands, wool or sellotape. We then used these stick men to retell the story on the small world tray.
We also read the story ‘Not a stick’. We thought about things we could pretend our sticks could be and wrote a sentence about this. Some ideas we thought it could be were a sword or a wand or a broomstick.
In phonics this week we learned the sounds u, b, f and e. We have also begun to learn some tricky words. All children now have tricky word tags in their bookbags containing the words’ ‘I, ‘the’ and ‘to’. These words are tricky because we cannot sound them out. We just need to learn what they say. Please practise these words with your child. When they know these words we will add new words to their tricky words tags.
On Thursday morning we had a ‘Stay and Learn’ session in the classroom, showing parents how we teach phonics in Reception. We also had various phonics games that the children could work on with their parents after the lesson. We hope that this session was useful for parents. If you have any further questions about phonics we would be happy to answer them.
On Friday the children were all wearing spots for Children in Need Day. We talked about what Children in Need Day is, and why we are raising money. We then decorated biscuits to sell at the end of the day. We would like to thank parents for their generous donations today!
