Happy New Year 2017!
It was with great excitement that we returned to school full of energy after a fun-filled Christmas holiday. The children really enjoyed writing all about what they did during their break in our English books. They took this opportunity to show off to their new teacher everything that they could do and Miss Mackenzie was very impressed. The next day in English, we focused on improving our sentences to include more detail with a range of exciting adjectives and using 'because' to extend our writing. We decided words like 'good' and 'nice' should be banned and agreed that our non-negotiable was capital letters and full stops!
In Maths, we used Dienes blocks to compare numbers using the greater than and less than signs. We used this to decide who won a game using a dartboard though it depended on the rules we decided on! Using our knowledge of place value, we then went on to order numbers in a range of different contexts, whether it be the weight of several cats or the height of different towers. Some of us even went on to complete a challenge of sorting through 0-100 cards between 'less than 60' and 'greater than 40'. It was great to see that the problem of finding numbers that went into both was overcome by 'putting numbers in the middle' and then solved with a Venn diagram which showed this even more clearly.
These past two days have allowed us to set ourselves new targets as New Year's resolutions. We discussed what made an effective target and wrote our own on rockets with our very own astronauts to go with them. You can now see our new display by the door when you drop off or pick up the children! It was impressive to see how many of us had achieved our target from September and we were eager to set ourselves new ones.
Finally, we got the opportunity to get to know each other better by writing a one-page profile that will be part of a booklet 'All about B2'. We started by going round the classroom choosing pictures that we felt reflected who we were and what we were interested in. It was great to see how different we all are and how many different interests we have in one classroom. We are all looking forward to continuing our journey together helping each other meet our targets throughout this term.
Have a great weekend!
